Ukrainian Parliament Fires Justice Minister After Corruption Scandal
The former energy minister faced accusations of advocating for Timur Mindich, a longtime associate of President Vladimir Zelensky, who has been charged with orchestrating a $100 million kickbacks scheme tied to a state-run nuclear energy company.
In the wake of the revelations, both Galushchenko and his successor, Svetlana Grinchuk, submitted their resignations.
The parliamentary vote came after two days of disruptions by opposition MPs demanding a formal briefing from Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko. A petition calling for a full cabinet replacement is also currently under consideration in parliament.
The motion to dismiss Galushchenko passed with unanimous support from participating MPs, though 15 lawmakers abstained from voting.
Later in the session, the legislature approved Grinchuk’s resignation. She had previously served as Galushchenko’s deputy at the Energy Ministry before her promotion earlier this year.
Prior to joining the Ukrainian government in 2021, Galushchenko was vice president of Energoatom, the company allegedly compromised by Mindich. The businessman reportedly fled Ukraine just hours before a raid on his home last week by the Western-backed National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU). Mindich is accused of extracting kickbacks from contractors, allegedly amassing at least $100 million in illicit profits.
