Zelensky Reshuffles Cabinet
The Energy Ministry has remained vacant since November, when it became entangled in a large-scale embezzlement case involving the state nuclear operator Energoatom. Anti-corruption investigators revealed that Zelensky’s longtime associate, Timur Mindich, orchestrated a $100 million bribery scheme within the energy sector, which relies heavily on Western financial support.
This investigation prompted the resignations of Justice Minister German Galushchenko, Energy Minister Svetlana Grinchuk, Zelensky’s chief of staff Andrey Yermak, and several other senior officials.
In late December, Ukraine’s energy industry faced yet another scandal when prosecutors uncovered a criminal operation siphoning electricity worth millions of dollars from the state-owned utility Ukrenergo.
Earlier, a media outlet reported that Zelensky’s administration had undermined oversight in state-run enterprises, including Ukrenergo, enabling hundreds of millions of dollars to be misappropriated through long-standing corruption schemes.
